Everday Dress: Flashback1

Misshapen bowler hat bought via Ebay, American Apparel grey catsuit, vintage Purse, found shorts, Circle scarf (Gift from IFBcon), Vintage Hanes dress socks, Vintage Riding boots.

By now you can guess I like my vintage pieces and have a hard time giving into brands. I like to feel the past of the clothes. I like these shorts because of the paint splatter all over them. It is only slightly noticeable. The shorts were found at the loading dock of my building. We have a free pile that everyone exploits. It is like a thrift store except free and more adventurous.

Yes_Please: Omg Books

Tim Barber's Highschool
I am not far removed from this 4 years of turbulence and I like the way Barber captures it. He makes it seem bearable. You can find this at Oogabooga Store.

Bernhard Willhelm's Het Totaal Rappel
I have always loved the boundaries pushed by Willhelm. I have also enjoyed following his work grow through the years. It is weird I can say that about this artist because he is fairly young.  You can find this at Oogabooga Store.

Helmut Newton and Lewis Carrol photography files
The photo files published by Thames and Hudson are comprehensive and exceptional. I picked Helmut Newton and Lewis Carrol as my favorites. They were both fairly risque artists but I am a fan of how they conveyed that. Not a la Terry Richardson, I am starting to get over the high contrasted photography and tits (and Va-j-j).

Comment: If I had space in my crammed library I would buy these and much much more. It might be my priorities but I don't mind shelling out money for books that inspire me. I guess they feel more permanent to me.

I am making a big switch

vs.

I am switching from good ole Google Reader to Bloglovin. Why the change? I want a prettier interface in which to view pretty things. I do realize that some of the blogs I follow aren't in the BL database but I will make do. This change will probably effect the blog in the following ways: 1) more posting 2) more excitement about materialistic things 3) better content. It is a win-win, no?

Movie Night: March 25,2010

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
The story is about a boy who finds something special through a friend and how they become friends and save the town. I am always in love with Hayao Miyazaki's work and I am impressed with Studio Ghibli for bringing more attention to his work. His movies seem to circle around people who are going to a life change or difficulty and how they deal with it. I posted a few stills that will keep you guessing.

What have I been up to?

Hat: Thrift, Yohji Yamamoto-esque Dress: Value Village Thrift

I retaught myself how to knit.
I started with a practice square and it evolved into a skirt in progress.
It will probably be two tone. Isn't it a pretty orange?
Some people talking in the background while i filmed this.
I am so much more excited about my life than photographing it so stay tuned for more videos!

How I love clothes and their shapes (and new ideas). I love old ideas too. And that is what I am loving right now. I have been scrap booking visual images in my brain of how I want my summer wardrobe to look. I am thinking FLOWY FLOWY FLOWY, with heels and sneakers interchanged. I want to be girly this summer. This was a long wish list. I only selected from Open Ceremony and Ooogabooga Shop. I can't wait to go thrifting more often. School has a way of messing with my fun. What are your picks for spring and summer?

I sometimes get dressed sideways (plz mute)

Shirt/tunic: African festival in Philly (2003), Leggings: Heattech by Uniqlo, Boots: Flea Market Scarf: handmade

This was what I wore to Philly . The video went side ways but I have already fixed the problem on the other videos.  Philly was great. Even though we stayed on South St it was a pretty chill time. I got two guilty pleasures on vinyl, more on my vinyl collection later, and got to enjoy the beautiful company of the sun. I have been lazily blogging lately and I am sorry, I haven't responded to comments. I am thankful for all of your kind words!

All this talk in the blogosphere of Leigh Bowery and the Micheal Clark Dance Company inspired me to re-watch this documentary about the late and great Leigh Bowery. Enjoy! And feel free to make comments on what you think.

My Fave of the Week!: Teen Vanity magazine Issue 7

I like risque photos but almost always if they are unintentional. That is why I like the work Sbastien and the crew at Teen Vanity do. There is also a heart warming letter to the Alexander McQueen. These are some photos from their newest issues that I find particularly interesting. Check out.....

Life Update in pictures.

The line at UNIQLO. Jesus! Such a long wait but it was worth it, I bought some long knee socks, a dress, and a belt for my man.

I have been all ova the place since the snow stopped and school started back up. So I owe you an update right? This is Illenia, I used to work with her. She is a doll and a very talented illustrator. Also she likes booty music so she is on my list for favorite people.

This is Mora I just met her the other day. She found an ingenious way of wearing my hat. I met her at a Microshow where my friends performed with their friends. It was a great and intimate experience

As of 4pm today I will be taking a 24-hour technology fast. No phone, computer, radio, or Tv. You can read about this experience here. You guessed it, it is a school project. I leave you, for the next few hours, a video of the Micheal Clark Dance Company.
Wish me luck.

Everyday Dress: Running errands

Purse: vintage, Scarf: found, Khaki peacoat/raincoat: Vintage Hat: a gift from Dad
Underneath: Africa print tunic dress and grandpa sweater (both thrifted)

My favorite thing to wear these days are hats and winter coats. While it has gotten warmer it was rainy yesterday, I am taking a picture outside the Social Security Office.  A key element in my wardrobe, I find and thrift most of the items. Only recently have I bought select pieces. It is time for me to spread my wings and start posting my outfits. More to come!

"Globalization is a myth"

-Yvan Rodic aka the Face Hunter

(Disclaimer: If you don't know I am going to blow your mind about a great guy in the streetstyle world.)
Many of my readers are bloggers themselves and know the name Face Hunter. I received an email from Thames and Hudson and they sent me a copy to review. Wow! Little ole me? I was flattered. Yvan's work has inspired me since day one and I literally fawn over his work. Rodic manages to convey happiness and gangsta in one photo and ultra feminine isolation in another (Like the photo above). The best part about Rodic the man is that he doesn't over think his work and has no formal training.

Oh, Miss Julia Frakes. She is a heavy weight contributor of Paper Magazine and has the best closet (just about ever, lol).  She looks completely confident. Rodic chose the street with dense traffic in the background and I like how calm she is. Rodic has traveled all over the world, hitting five continents, and has managed to create his own philosophies of his work. And although Rodic is not a philosopher he offers a new word for what is taking place: creolization. And while this sort of verbage seems arcane I think it is a good word to describe how easy someone from one country can communicate and share ideas with another person in a place thousands of miles away. Favorite things: Shoes and bag.

In another post I explain just how detail oriented Rodic's photos are. He does not compensate the clothing's shape in a shot. I think the jacket is Terence Koh, any help with identifying the jacket would be great. His portraits are so carefree....

Floral gloves and a killer hat are what make this outfit. There are little charms in every photo. I could look at this with my friend Jenny and we could pick out various details we like about one photo. In societies around the world media is becoming a bigger and better format for communication and absorbing information. Rodic believes, and I agree, that globalization is a myth. In his book he states “The belief that international brands and pop culture are making the world a standardized society populated by clones is an old-skool science fiction vision of the future, not the reality of the 21st century.”

The coolest mom around! Again, another example of how Rodic shots carefree images. His subjects aren't trying too hard and are a great document of emotion and everyday life. Favorite thing: leggings and skateboard.

To get you in the spring/summer spirit I chose this photo. The subject of the photo is so sunshiny and happy. She is wearing an ingenious jumper, too! My favorite thing: Tote and layering bangles and watches.
In all, I am truly inspired with the subjects of Yvan Rodic's work. Included in the book are photos of London club kids, Susie Bubble, and that geometric dress worn by a certain German editor.

You can purchase Yvan's book at Thames and Hudson's website (HERE).

Yes, Please: the Fashion Week edition

Albertus Swaneopel -for-Timo Weiland
It's that time again where I gush over the things I want.If you know me personally then you know that I love wrapping my head in fabric. I even have a Christian Dior turban I wear just about every week. I can't get a enough of them! Albertus Swaneopel does a great turban interpretation, a very loose version that I will probably sport all summer.

I am not a big fan of Alberta Ferreti's newest collection but leave it to Refinery29 to boost my benign interest by throwing in a Muppets reference. I hope you are aware that there will be a new Muppets movie coming out in the near future. I also hear Miss Piggy is being styled as Lady Gaga but it is probably a horrible rumor.

This is a plug, I repeat I am shamelessly plugging my etsy shop I have been working on starting in a year. It isn't that I have been compiling pieces per say. I have changed my vision for the shop a million times and have settled on picking vintage pieces that appeal to current trends or current inspirations I see in editorials. I hope to jump start it next Monday. Equipment failures set me back, gotta love business!

This is a recent party pic of Aurel Schmidt and Chloe Sevingy. I don't look up to them but I sure as hell respect what they do and how they carry themselves. Regardless of what the haters say they continue to do what they do.  It is a good lesson for the sheepish at heart like myself.

Not one, but two shots of my favorite look from Damir Doma. Words can't express. The layering of the grays and long silhouette. I am a long silhouette kind of girl. This collection, and some others from Paris Fashion Week, make me use lots of explatives!!!!

Dear Sam, by LOVER

I wish to write a book on the innovation of fashion videos but someone more prominent will beat me to it. They have such an impact on how people buy that I think most of the consuming public don't understand yet. I know it is more personal when a designer decides to take a big leap into another form in which they can display their clothes. Phenomenal to say the least.

Visual...Joy D. Basquiat?

I wanted hair like my friend Greglan, he has a lions mane. My hair, on the other hand, is more like Jean-Michel Basquiat. See what I mean?

Basquiat, he's the man!

Me and my favorite sweater (vintage L.L. Bean).

My hair used to be this thing that I spent an enormous amount of time, money, and product on. It was a ridiculous amount! I thought that by manufacturing this "look" I was doing myself a service. Now love my hair now more than ever and I am much more comfortable with myself. The best part about it is that my boyfriend loves it too, although he would prefer longer hair in any format. All in all people generally enjoy my hair and I think it has a lot to do with my comfortability. This is not a post knocking those that spend hours or hundreds of dollars on their hair. This is merely me expressing much elation about how comfortable I have become with myself. My advice to those that want a "new look" do something for YOU not for a trend because your hair is a much more permanent statement than your clothing. Take it from Tavi who dyed her hair blue or Dree Hemingway who went pink for a bit. Be true to what you like and you will be happier for it.

IFave_Daniel Pallilo

IFave Daniel Pallilo because....

photos: The Fashionisto

My introduction to Daniel Pallilo was through HelLooks way back in 2005 or so. His name would pop up often when people would discuss what they were wearing. I decided to do some research on the brand and where it came from. Since then I have been in love with his bulky shapes ever since. Pictured above is his newest men's collection. You can revel over the rest of the collection here. In the present I am happy that he has more notoriety and many stores such as Jargol and Welcome to Hunters La.

Presentation:

His collections over the seasons inspire me to do big things.
Shape:I read an interview on him two years back. He was asked to describe his collection and his response? Big and Black. This is part of his swagger but an even bigger part of why I love his clothes. The shapes are always huge and comfy. I wish I could get my hands on the striped sweatshirt in from his Spring 2009 collection.

photo: jargol.com
"Swagger": Palillo is very good at producing a great product but not really boasting about it. That is because he makes the clothes for himself. He has remained underground for many years. The public, especially those looking for some "outrageous" street wear, know exactly who he is. Most of the stores that carry his collections often sell out. His message is tied into his clothing. Often he is compared to Bernhard Willhelm and I think it is a somewhat fair comparison. However, Palillo stays away from color for the most part and conveys a message using, typically, black and white.
