Fashion Film Monday!: Tiger Tiger x Gppr

This is the last Fashion Film Monday! How sad to see this segment go but don't weep just yet. There will be more beautiful fashion films with beautiful commentary to come at The Unsewn! Misogyny and maniless come across really well in this fashion film by the European menswear/streetwear line.

Fashion Film Monday!/ Paying the bills #3: Alvaro de la Herran for Elle and Range Rover

Magazine's have to pay the bills too. How you ask: Ads are one but how about taking that to the next level? What if the editorial and the car ads came alive? That is exactly what Alvaro de la Herran did. He created a masterful experience that left me wanting chunky wristlets, big faux fur, and a huge SUV. I know better than to destroy the environment with one of those things but it just looked so cool! This is exactly the point of a commercial and a fashion film. I figure they are slowly becoming one in the same and this is one of the first examples of this merger. Although there are several sites focusing on discussing these things I hope to open it up a little more with my new blog. Let's get a little heavy this year, okay?

Fashion Film Monday!: Dervishes in Space part one!

Riese Farbaute is a young film production company from Hamburg, Germany. They primarily produce fashion films and branded shorts. Dervishes in Space, a Science-Fashion-Film told in three episodes. And because I am a Libra (Sept. 28) I thought it would be fitting to present the first installment. I like Riese Farbaute's abrasive style and I hope you will too. Be sure to check out Part Two and Part Three.

Fashion Film Monday!:

What is important to me in this video is not the clothing but the feel of the "cool girl" in the swanky hotel. It defines it! SGCNYC has some great pieces on their site that you should check out, some of the pieces are reasonably priced!

So I have a few questions to pose to you....
How relevant are fashion films to you?
Are fashion films inspiring or more of a documentation of a collection?
Would you like to create your own fashion film? What brand?

Fashion Film Monday!: Romance Was Born SS11 by Kris Moyes

City Limits from Kris Moyes on Vimeo.

Dilectable and fancy are the two words that come to mind with this collection and its video look book. Anyone getting a Twin Peaks vibe? Romance Was Born's collections have been mentioned here and there in the blogosphere but I can't wait to wax poetic this spring and summer. And they made it into my inspiration folders so expect to hear more about them soon. Kris Moyes is best known for his music videos featuring bands such as Wolfmother, Franz Ferdinand, Cut Copy, Hercules and Love Affair, Architecture in Helsinki, The Presets, and Beck. If you would like to read/see more from him be sure to check out his website: http://www.kmoyes.com.

In a few words, how would you describe this collection?

Fashion Film Monday: Philip Lim speaks

Fashion Film Friday will be moved to Mondays from now on as to make room for Friends Fridayz. This week Philip Lim speaks to Purple Magazine about the making of his finale garment for last season. I love indulging in what designers have to say about what they do. Looking at the process and the assistants are also amazing! The assistants are the unsung heroes that are so readily available to the designer and willing to work with him or her. The video is shot well and really helped me to understand how such a complicated garment was made.

Fashion Film Friday: Naughty and Nice

Happy Holidays! I will not deny you another Fashion Film Friday, even if it is coming a little late. 'Tis the season of giving so I am presenting two videos today of polar opposite. I hope you are all well. If you are not at your destination yet have safe travels. I am taking a much needed break, see you soon for more fun!

Acousmatic: Vera Ivanova; Directed, cut, camera: Andrey Nikolaev; Starring: Natasha Sych; Styling: Danila Polyakov; Producer: Oleg Rozenthal

The naughty: This first video reminds me of Black Swan and the crappy feeling of standing all day at work with 3 hours of sleep. The soundtrack and poise of the models is what attracted me to this video in the first place. There is some allure in creepy things. The music was produced in 2001 with the theremin, a creepy instrument in its own right that takes years and years to play properly. Simplicity adds to the uncertain nature of this film. Expect to hear more on this blog about the director Andrey Nikolaev.

Director - David Lemm; Sound - The Gothenburg Address; Styling - Alexandra Fiddes, Frances Spencer; Principle photographer on shoot- Darran Barton; Hair and make up - Katie Angus; Assistant - Emma Segal; Model - Romane at Superior Model Management; Location - Jack Kane Community Centre, Edinburgh

The nice: David Lemm is good at the moving lookbook. He does fast paced editorials as well that leave the viewer salivating for just a few more glimpses. The first video is from the e-shop Moon and Mars, who have some really cute Carin Wester boots on sale. The second video is an oldie of Lemm's that is more a fashion jewelry video but I have yet to see any director or stylist do it quite like this. This falls into the nice category because sparkles and smiles and dance music always do! Let me know what you think of the films below!

Fashion Film Friday: Uniqlo's Uniqlok

Uniqlo has been a favorite for a while although it has only been a couple of years since I have been able to get my hands on their clothes. This is all thanks to their New York flagship which I cannot wait to visit in February. Above is a video of which I can't really explain. I know if you click on the Uniqlok link on their site it will take you there and the video will play in a continuous loop. I encourage you to go to the site and experience it for yourself. Tell me what you think below!

Fashion Film Friday: Terence Koh and Timo Weiland on Style Like U

Oh, even when I think I have covered all bases, I have not. For fashion is fleeting and I could never keep up with everything, even my own favorites. I am a huge, I mean HUGE, fan of StyleLikeU. It is a website dedicated to finding out what is in people's minds as well as their closets. Sometimes I am disapointed that people don't have stories, yes that is unfair, but sometimes I am delighted by the clothes. One of my favorite artists of the 21st century and one of my favorite designer's of the 21st century were interviewed. Two birds, one stone.

Terence Koh, not talking. I was more intrigued to hear Elisa Goodkind speak. It is quite a powerful video. And has changed my mind about the importance of what SLU is doing.

Any designer inspired by Bueller and executes it is A+ in my book. I am most attracted to Timo Weiland because they are in love with visual and physical texture. That, my friends, is my goal in my wardrobe (along with volume, I'm a mess). And I am not going to even touch on the slight mention at Eckstein's family's factory in China....

Fashion Film Friday!: Comme des Garcon x Quay brothers

Two years ago the Quay brothers were honored in Philadelphia. I already knew about them and rushed at the chance to finally see them in person! They also has a small collection of their sets at a nearby gallery. Fast forward to now. My love for them is basically forever. So when I was browsing YT (YouTube) I saw this commercial for Comme des Garcon's newest fragrance. What a delight. And yes, it has little to do with clothing but lots to do with the premise of fashion film: depicting the product and letting the consumer be entranced by the mood and feel.

Fashion Film Friday: John Davis via Rush Blog

I like the dialogue . Style is about wearing something timeless and that has long lasting importance to you. You can say that style and fashion are the same but I would have to disagree. My experience in New York has really solidified how I dress and what I think about style. What do you think about style? Is it just some arbitrary term? John Davis has a great outlook.

Fashion Film Friday!: Proenza Schouler and Harmony Korine collab

This is a newsbreak!
I love Harmony Korine, I have seen all his works excluding Trash Humpers. I love that he refuses to take video and film and make it into something cheap. Instead he opts to always go outside of the box. Sometimes that leaves critiques to isolate Korine into as an art film director. How cheap of them! He is usually dealing with difficult stereotypes and social mores. I get a kick out of seeing him distort and amplify them.

This collaboration is odd, to say the least. It captures a young Nashville "gang member" and her friends fully clad in Proenza Schouler. She discusses her life and how she, as most teens and 20s, wants to escape her town. You get the sense that her daily activities are a release from everything. It is a pretty relate-able story. The clothes are almost apart of this story. They act as a uniform for this sort of rebellion or release. It's uncertain who came to who to do this project. But I believe it was a good decision on the parts of both collective teams to push fashion film into something more than showcasing the clothes in all their glory. The dialogue included in this film is the key.

Fashion Film Friday: The video and the collection

It is fun to mix it up with feature as I have been including double features here and there. Today it is Hussein Chalayan's turn. What a great design house! This is another one of those designers I was exposed to at an early age because of Fashion Television.

*because of copyright Hussein has only allowed a portion of the 2000 A/W collection to be shown on YouTube. You can see the collection in its entirety at husseinchalayan.com.

Fashion Film Friday: Griffin presented by Present Future Films (Double feature)

photos provided by www.presentfuture.net

I was recently contacted by Present Future Films about Griffin's video for Italian Vogue. We discussed Griffin's work a bit and I agreed to post about his work.  I highly recommend his newest fashion film Zan Dara. As an incentive here are some juicy stills. How do you contain the exploration of light, emotion, and the "concept of being" into one minute? I would have to say that Griffin is pushing the envelop a bit. In a sense he is pushing the envelop to question how limited could you make art. And I like his ideas. He has worked with popular music artists like Pharrel but I am most excited about what he will do in the realm of fashion film. Diane Pernet, of course, was the first to explore his work and went as far as to feature two of his films. Pernet selects fashion films, most of a peculiar kind, to Italian Vogue's video lab. I can't believe that film has come to this point as I was losing hope that anyone (directors and producers) wanted to stretch boundaries at all.

I was not familiar with his work until I realized he was commissioned by Rodarte for Nick Knights SHOWstudio to do a fashion film. It was called Vox Humana and features Jenny Lewis. Oddly enough Griffin has worked with Kenneth Anger who I featured last week. I guess it is a small world....
