Friend Friday Exclusive!!! In response to a friend pt.2: Why do we blog?
Yay, It is time for another Friends Friday! Only recently have I delved into the world of the online blog event. I shied away in part because it took too much time out of my schedule for something I considered a hobby. A year later I have found a blog event to be apart of: Kendi of Kendieveryday.com's 30x30 which is described as a way to remix your wardrobe and think about how you dress. I thought that tying this blog post with the one from yesterday was a great opportunity. Now I can exercise my belief that the advertising and branding is something that can easily be surpassed if your ideas about what YOUR style is! While I have found my calling to make both a written and physical statement it is easy for others to look at a blog event and have a different agendas. Before reading up on this I had no idea that someone would put so much time and effort into joining and participating in one of these events in order to reap benefits of fame. I am not naive I just think that is a waste of time. There is a lot of us [fashion] bloggers. We all have lots to contribute. Why waste it on a small chance to be famous or reap unlikely financial rewards? This is what I will be discussing this week with some added surprise about my decision to not attend IFB conference. And with all this wordiness I have decided to add a photo from the 30x30 project that I am currently working on through the month of February. I will do my best to take pictures each day of what I am wearing along with my two cents.
1. With all the blogging events out there how do you determine which ones to participate in and which ones to avoid? There are so many events whether online or offline and it is difficult to choose. There isn't a wrong or right event to go to but there is a wrong or right for your own blog. I have fallen in love with the idea that I can discuss fashion blogging and the fashion industry from different perspectives. Since this revelation of sorts I have realized that certain online and offline events may not help my blog in anyway. I chose Kendi's 30x30 project because it relates to my assesment of my own purchases and the control of fashion media on consumption. This is an idea, while reading Kendi's mission statement, also came through. To be an efficient blogger you have to go beyond what you think people will like and write about what you know or what you are learning.
Sadly, this season, I will not be attending the IFB conference. Life has stood in the way of my presence this season but I give hugs and kisses to those that will be there. I talked to a few bloggers in seasons past that felt that the IFB conference was useless and that bloggers don't really benefit. The same was said of other blogging events and meetups around the city. Call me crazy but I think the meeting of thinkers on the a new subject like fashion blogging is something I always want to be apart of as a blogger. Excluding yourself from the discussion is a little foolish however you blog what you know or like and if IFB or any other event doesn't fit that mold of your blog then it isn't foolish at all.
2. Be honest, have you ever jumped on the bandwagon of some blogging movement/event for the wrong reasons? How did that turn out? I have a strange fear of coming off fake or even worse that I don't care on this blog which is why my blog posts have gotten longer and a little more thought out. That said, I wouldn't involve myself in a project unless I was dedicated and had my own motivations. And my motivations always have to be pure because it would most likely come out in my writing. I have always been one to over analyze something and I think my blog is a good way to work out that issue and to really see if I have something to say or if I am just mindlessly ranting. So, to be honest, I would never jump on the bandwagon for the wrong reasons.
3. How do you give your own flair to a blog event while still maintaining the general mission and purpose? A blog event online or otherwise is really what you make it. Since the 30x30 project is my first online adventure I would like to put emphasis on my small analysis on how and why we buy as fashion consumers. So maybe I am taking a more analytical approach? With an online event you can get pretty creative and as the month progresses I hope to potential grow this idea of fast and luxury fashion consumption. Plus, I always have to add humor to the conversation!
4. When determining the best content for your blog what criterion do you keep in mind? A lighter approach to discussing fashion, art, music, movies, etc. In this way I think I am set apart but it also proves to be a problem. I could have long lengthy posts about the relevance of one collection in Milan but that is neglecting 90 percent of the fashion world. I keep the resources in mind and how much information is out there about a particular subject I want to write about. If there is little to none in the way of information I am more prone to talk about it! I love drowning in resources and sifting through them like some old man in a library basement. With the way I go about discussing the subjects I do on this blog I kind of beg for it anyway.
5. While everything will not suit your blog, how do you try and support your fellow bloggers who are participating in something worthwhile but not your style? I post about what my friends are doing regardless if it fits into the content of my blog. I think support of my friends has always fit in my blog because I don't mind name dropping them and I really love what some of them come up with. Some of my friends are bloggers, artists, musicians, and great people: so why not? I have in the past snuck my friends into the features of this blog like when I had two lovely friends competing in the Sunglass Hut's Full Time Fabulous Blogger competition. I think that is one of my strong suits. Even with this post I managed to fit three posts into one. Don't worry I won't get to out of hand...

New York Fashion Week: Day 0 and 1
My internship is fantastic. Thank you all for your well wishes. I have met and worked with so many amazing people and this is just the beginning! I arrived in New York and was able to settle into my new digs for the next two weeks. The first night we went to a production featuring clothing by Emilie Jerard. She is a New Jersey designer who is really into goth wear but much more sophisticated than your average Hot Topic shopper. She is worth a closer look.

The next day was the 2nd annual IFB conference! So much fun because I met old friends and new. Most of the bloggers were fantastic public speakers and I was most impressed with how they presented themselves. My favorites were Susie Bubble, Bryan Boy, and Amy Odell of The Cut. Jenine of IFB, once again out did herself. I will be at the IFB/Amex tweet up on Monday. Come say hi!

IFB recap pt.3: the panels
Panel 1: I didn't get to see this panel first hand but did see the videos that Bobbin Talk posted on YouTube. They discussed marketing plans of action and possibly how they can be applied to bloggers. This was a great panel that I wish I was present for because it was one of the most cut and dry panels of the whole conference that shed light on the "business" side of blogging. Will I partake in this whirlwind of fame? Probably not but I do love learning about business strategies and marketing tools so it was all quite informative.
Panel 2:To light a bigger entreprenuerial fire the second panel: The Business of Blogging was a little less productive in some areas. I would have liked for them to talk more about their strategies than themselves and their blogs. I know that sounds a little catty but the point of the panel was to discuss way in which to make money by being a blogger. I wrote down a list from the discussion and it is as follows: Blog Ads, sponsors, receive free merch, and produce profitable premium content. All of these options are fantastic but as a starting blogger it would be hard to manage even half of this list. They did drive home the importance of creating a relationship with everyone you deal with which includes publishers, designers, and PR persons. Overall the panel was helpful especially when they discussed getting taken advantage of and how to avoid such measures.
Panel 3: Oh, the infamous Blog Ethics Panel. I wanted to gush about this panel because of what was discussed and a slightly out of line blogger who asked a question. But I will hold off and let you watch the footage for yourself to see the latter. I was most excited to see Diane Pernet and Imram Ahmed speak. It was well worth it to hear Ahmed because he has had a blog for a while and tracks the goings on in the fashion industry like a hawk. I, as a history student, admire his veracity and he made very good points. This was the big questions: 1)Is it ethical for a blogger to accept free items from a company? 2)Does that hinder how your voice is heard? 3) How does this discussion differ from fashion editors and magazine staffers?
Firstly I think it does hinder the voice of the blogger if he or she is only posting what was given to him or her. I have dropped bloggers from my reader for that reason alone. It cheapens their writing and it becomes difficult to trust their opinion. The third question ties in, most people read blogs because they do not trust the concrete opinion of fashion editors. I believe you can receive a product and not be swayed by "free stuff". Hell, since starting this blog, I have received little free items and that is okay. I love blogging about the things that I love and I will not budge from my beliefs. Wendy Brandes, a blogger and the moderator, made a good point by later lamenting that there wasn't a fashion editor on the panel to defend fashion magazines. The fashion magazines did get bashed a bit on the panel but I think it was a type of conversation that never happened and everyone was getting their opinions on the floor. Overall I this was my favorite panel in the conference because there was a constructive conversation that involved the majority of the panelists.
EDIT: Jessica from What I Wore, a panelist at the conference, recently posted a conversation she had with the FTC. Read it here.
Panel 4: Was what I like to call "the fun panel". Some of the most respected bloggers on the internet were on stage in front of me and all I could do was smile. I smiled through the whole panel because usually these people don't get out. Tavi lives in the suburbs and has a regular life outside of blogging. I have been reading Susie Bubble Since her second month of posting. Bryan Boy I have been reading for even longer. The girls from Fashionista fit in there somewhere but I am not sure how. They are good at what they do but there are several other blogs that do the same thing so I thought that their presence on the panel was ill fitted. Not to say they are "bad" bloggers but perhaps they could run a panel about fashion blogging as journalism. Now for the basics. Tavi and Susie discussed the media's love of drama and that there really isn't this overarching tension between fashion bloggers and fashion editors. While Bryan Boy talked about how being a blogger is literally sitting on the computer all day. And lest we not forget Phil Oh, who represented the street-style bloggers who talked about the very different dynamic that is present between a street-style photographer/blogger and a fashion blogger. All in all it was a fun panel with a star studded audience that left some sitting in the aisles.
IN CONCLUSION, I was proud of Jennine and the staff for putting it all together and allowing everyone to be together in a nurturing environment. I think most thanks needs to go to Jenine who managed to make the conference donation only. I was very privileged to see and hear some of my inspirations speak. I was equally privileged to talk to many established bloggers and those that were making the fashion blogging world tick. It was a wonderful experience and with word it might happen in New York next season I am stoked! (to say the least)

MKA in Love Magazine/ Joy's Big Day

MKA smokin and styling in Love Magazine.
I needed this trip, it was nice to be selfish and roam around the city with no time limit and no expressed goals. I ended the days with an enriching bath.
Today's docket will be exciting! I sound like a little school girl but I have reason. Fashion blogging, and blogging itself, has become such an entity of its own on the internet. It is also growing faster than traditional journalists can handle. Why am I excited about the IFB conference? Because for the second time ever the best of the best will be discussing the ins and outs. And not only is that an important but it is special. A lot of these men and women I admire and welcome their opinions and ideas. Without most of them my blog, Iplayfaves, wouldn't exist in its truest form for you to read.

I love questions! Please feel free to ask away on my Formspring. I really don't know if it will be fruitful or not but I am excited to see what kind of questions I get. Who knows if you don't try, ya?
I will also be attending the IFB conference this Monday in New York. I am very excited to hear what people like Tavi, Bryan, and Tavi have to say. And I will be reporting back on my adventures through video, SMS, and good old fashion blogging.
