Fashion Film Monday!: African American culture Live in Japan!

If you are familiar with this feature you know that the videos shown are usually well crafted fashion films or interviews that have perfect lighting and editing. Today is a different case and to me quite peculiar. Before the internet created a new consciousness of buddy or friend. This was able to happen. Cross Colors, a brand run by Carl Jones, was able to promote in Japan to an overwhelmingly positive audience. Not only did I grow up at the end of the brands popularity in the 90s but I had a pair of cross color shorts. They were the sickest shorts I owned! The brand left my memory until a few days ago. Jones created the label to celebrate color and diversity as well as condemn gang violence in the 80s. Political messages in clothing are nothing new but I think Jones branded his ideas well. This video inspired me and I hope it will do the same for you. As always I love hearing what you think below!

Fashion Film Monday!: Susie Bubble on MonkiTv

Susie Bubble is a hero and I am glad that Steve from Style Salvage makes a small appearance. Without sounding too creepy I have followed Susie Lau's blog since the first year it got its start. No one can argue its importance or Susie's amazing self learned fashion scholar, of sorts. This short film gives a glimpse of the many aspects of Susie's blog career and what having a successful blog entails. She is no joke. I hope you enjoy! Also of note: Monki's approach to this series which I will discuss next month when they have a new fashionista they cover!

Fashion Film Monday: Philip Lim speaks

Fashion Film Friday will be moved to Mondays from now on as to make room for Friends Fridayz. This week Philip Lim speaks to Purple Magazine about the making of his finale garment for last season. I love indulging in what designers have to say about what they do. Looking at the process and the assistants are also amazing! The assistants are the unsung heroes that are so readily available to the designer and willing to work with him or her. The video is shot well and really helped me to understand how such a complicated garment was made.

How do you feel about peering into the creative process of a designer?

Fashion Film Friday: Andy Warhol's Debbie Harry and Friends

It is Debbie Harry! I really wanted to be like her when I was a kid. Mind you I am all of 22, by the time I was into Blondie they were already played out. But I love Andy Warhol films and it is possible you do too. What else is there to say? The shimmery fabrics in the last take are inspiration for a new year's eve outfit I won't have time to construct but still dream about. And...I want the shorts that guy is wearing. What is your favorite piece in the video?

Fashion Film Friday!: Proenza Schouler and Harmony Korine collab

This is a newsbreak!
I love Harmony Korine, I have seen all his works excluding Trash Humpers. I love that he refuses to take video and film and make it into something cheap. Instead he opts to always go outside of the box. Sometimes that leaves critiques to isolate Korine into as an art film director. How cheap of them! He is usually dealing with difficult stereotypes and social mores. I get a kick out of seeing him distort and amplify them.

This collaboration is odd, to say the least. It captures a young Nashville "gang member" and her friends fully clad in Proenza Schouler. She discusses her life and how she, as most teens and 20s, wants to escape her town. You get the sense that her daily activities are a release from everything. It is a pretty relate-able story. The clothes are almost apart of this story. They act as a uniform for this sort of rebellion or release. It's uncertain who came to who to do this project. But I believe it was a good decision on the parts of both collective teams to push fashion film into something more than showcasing the clothes in all their glory. The dialogue included in this film is the key.

Fashion Film Friday: Fashion Horizons (1940)

Produced and directed by Harry D. Donahue.

I have always been fascinated by these vintage fashion featurettes. Seeking out information I discovered it was curated as a travelogue set in the "modern" 1930s. The appeal of the cowboy was still very strong. The Kodachrome is in excellent condition and captures the essence of a culture thrust into popularity. Honestly, it could be said this is one of the first examples of fashion as pop culture in film!

Look out for the transitions and the reactions of the crowd. They are my favorite things!

I have always liked Yohji Yamamoto, his collections are inspiring, yes, but always with flare. Always with a sense of purpose. Maybe some of the cuts and volumes are frivolous but he shows them well. I guess I have a crush on his body of work. The only other collection I can think of that is similar is the Viktor Rolf FW collection.

I wish to write a book on the innovation of fashion videos but someone more prominent will beat me to it. They have such an impact on how people buy that I think most of the consuming public don't understand yet. I know it is more personal when a designer decides to take a big leap into another form in which they can display their clothes. Phenomenal to say the least.
